Denis Irwin believes Manchester United’s hopes of a year rest on the back of Paul Pogba.
The France World Cup midfielder ended last year with 13 goals, while also topping the standings assists with nine.
Former United defender Irwin insists Pogba includes a attitude which is critical for Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s side to improve last season.
“There’s not too many gamers of Paul’s quality,” Irwin said. “He has plenty of players facing him who’ve got great speed and I think he has the comprehension of having the ability to pick a terrific pass.
“We want consistency from him occasionally but going forward today and especially where we’ve started controlling games he’s likely to be a big, big player for us.
“I think every team needs a risk taker but I consider him and think he’s the one that can unlock doors.
“We’ve created enough opportunities to win games so he’s likely to be extremely significant for all of us.”
United have picked up four points from their opening five games, which makes them in place heading into the worldwide break.
They were forced to settle for a draw off on Saturday, leaving them without a win since their opening day.
Irwin is convinced his former side are currently going in the right direction and states that fans should accept the procedure will take some time.
“I know that we’ve only picked up two points from three matches but it feels like we need to have a lot more,” Irwin added.
“We may need to take a tiny bit of patience and we might not challenge the initial two this season but surely we need to maintain there and greater than annually.
United will be sweating on the fitness of summer enrolling Aaron Wan Bissaka, who was forced to withdraw from the team on Tuesday of England with a back injury.
The 21-year-old has amazed because his #50m movement also Irwin considers Wan Bissaka and summertime inclusion Harry Maguire will reinforce a United defence which accelerates last year to 54 goals.
“His positional sense looks really, really good,” Irwin explained.
“That is a massive surprise for someone who has been a winger for years. He has been a huge plus this season although he has got a lot to learn.
“We will need to start keeping clean sheets but I think we have begun making steps in the ideal way in assisting in our defensive job, I truly do.”
